Half of my life is spent at 59 degrees North latitude on the shores of Alaska's Kachemak Bay. The other half is spent at 70 degrees North latitude on the Central Beaufort Sea Coast. Lots happens in between, too, in this land known as The Last Frontier.

40 Pound Action Packer

Start packing your breakfast and lunches. Load alternately , much like the order you will be taking them out. We chose Action Packers for these heavy meals: this will allow us to keep our main food source on the ground and still safe from foxes, martens, and wolves. Bears should still be sleeping soundly at this time of year, though it is not uncommon for rogue boars to wake in mid-winter and wander. We hope that none wander near us, and am anticipating that they won't. Dinner will consist of dehydrated Mountain House meals which will be packed into a water/airtight river duffle bag. This will be light enough to be hung in a tree with our beverage bag while we are still in the treeline. Once we are above treeline and working our way across exposed tundra there will be some additional room in the Action Packers due to our consumption. The idea is to always keep them full at night or during sidetrips when the camp is unattended. The Action Packer loaded with both of our 14 lunches and 14 breakfasts weighs in at 40 pounds. That's about 36 pounds of food which equals 2.5 pounds of food for two people for breakfast and lunch. This fits perfectly into the rear end of the sled, leaving additional room for more gear, which I will get to later. I am thinking that we will be hauling approximately 65 pounds of gear and food when we kick off.
